Cool Rap Video Wins Students a New Roof

This is a great story.

Social media can be cool when it's usd for a good cause.

Students at Greenfield Hebrew Academy (GHA) in Atlanta created a rap video for Microsoft Bing’s "Our School Needs" competition.

School officials entered the contest which asked teachers and students to think about what their school needs the most, and how it would benefit from winning a grand prize of $100,000.

Set to popular rapper B.O.B.'s hit "Airplanes," students sang, rapped and danced their way through the halls of their school describing their school's need for a new roof. One student rapped, "We could use the help for getting a new roof. Everytime it rains, the leaks are the proof."

GHA won the top prize out of five big winners. Schools in California, Colorado, New York and Louisiana won prizes ranging from $25,000 to $50,000.


Students decided to pay forward their big win to schools who did not win cash. They collected books for a school in Salt Lake City and instruments for a school in New Orleans.

This is just another way social media can be used. “The video entry really took on a life of its own. This contest shows how the power of social media is alive and well,” added Jennifer Slutsky, a GHA parent whose husband headed the long-range building and grounds committee that identified the need for a new roof.

  1. This is awesome! What a terrific video (and that song is really pretty catchy--it's still going through my head... roof right now, roof right now! This is truly one great example of positive uses of social media. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Wow! What a good way to do your CSR activity. Social media offers a lot of potential on promoting brands/services online. This is just one of the cool ways. The roof Microsoft gave as a first prize for the school can be one of the instruments for these children to have a better future.

  3. I agree with Kristopher! Social media does offer a lot of potential in ads and promotion. It was also a great move from them to pay it forward and actually help those schools that didn’t win. Kudos to these guys!

  4. I agree with the both of you, Kristopher and Chantay! There's a lot of potential for social media as one of the ways to promote a company's brand and services. However, it should still be the concept which should drive the campaign, not the platform/technology. I might say, in that regard, Microsoft did the right thing. The roof they gave will be such an inspiration for the kids and others who watched the video. Great job!
